WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION
What you need to know about registering on the
Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry:
1. The registry is open to people aged 18-45 in good general health
2. You can register by making an appointment to join the registry at the time of a blood donation at your nearest Australian Red Cross Blood Donor Centre - phone 13 14 95 or visit www.donateblood.com.au
3. YOU MUST CLEARLY TELL THEM WHEN YOU BOOK AND AT THE START OF YOUR APPOINTMENT THAT YOU WISH TO JOIN THE BONE MARROW REGISTRY.
4. The Red Cross will take a small amount of extra blood which will be used to test your HLA, this is the blood marker that indicates if people are bone marrow matches, your HLA results will be stored on the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry.
5. You can't test and joint the registry only for Tania, the donation process is anonymous, but if you are a match for her you will be found via the search processes underway to find her donor.
6. Most people who register on the bone marrow registry will never be asked to donate. Only 1 in 1,500 people per year are asked to donate. But having lots of people on the registry is important for increasing sick people's chance of finding a donor.
7. It is important that the ethnic diversity of the bone marrow registry is improved, so that people from less represented ethnicities and people with mixed heritage, such as Tania, can find a donor when they need it.
8. If you live in a rural area and do not have access to a blood donor centre or are not eligible to give blood but still wish to join the bone marrow registry you may still be able to join, call the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry for more information on phone - 13 14 95.
